Background
The Food Directorate was established in August 2014 pursuant to section 11(1) of Agriculture and Food Authority Act 2013, with a mandate to regulate, promote and develop scheduled food crops which are broadly categorized into three;
- Cereals
- Legumes
- Roots and Tubers.
The Directorate has developed the Crops (Irish Potato) Regulations, 2019, and the Crops (Food Crops) Regulations, 2019. These were gazetted and acceded to by Parliament on May 2019 and April 2020 respectively to enable the Directorate to operationalize its mandate.

Functions
The functions of the Directorate entail: -
- Identify policy gaps and advice national and County Governments on food crops matters;
- Regulating the production, post-harvest handling and marketing of produce and products of food crops;
- Provision of advisory and regulatory services on matters related to food crops;
- Collecting and collating data, establishing and maintaining a database on food crops;
- Advice on research priorities and facilitating technology transfer in the food crops subsector;
- Promoting the production, processing, grading, storage, collection, transportation and warehousing of all food crops produce and products;
- Regulating imports and exports of produce and products of food crops;
- Developing, implementing and enforcing standards for produce and products of food crops; and
- Coordinate market development, value-addition initiatives and trade of food crops.
